Hi, this is HACHIYA from Gadget Esprit. Thanks for stopping by.

If you are a golf fan planning a trip to Japan, here is one for your bucket list: the Baycurrent Classic Presented by LEXUS — the only official PGA TOUR event held in Asia. I went to the first edition in 2025 at Yokohama Country Club, and with the 2026 dates now announced, I wanted to share what a day there is actually like as a local fan.

The huge welcome panel at the entrance. Seeing the players and the tournament name, the excitement kicked in.

What is the Baycurrent Classic?

For years, the PGA TOUR stop in Japan was the ZOZO Championship. From 2025 it was renamed the Baycurrent Classic Presented by LEXUS and moved to the historic Yokohama Country Club, just south of Tokyo. It remains the only official PGA TOUR event in Asia, with a purse of around 8 million US dollars and a field of world-class players.

For an amateur golfer like me who had never seen the pros live, watching the best players in the world on home soil is a genuinely special experience.

Getting there (be ready to walk)

  • Date I attended: Friday, October 10, 2025 (a weekday)
  • Venue: Yokohama Country Club
  • How: on-site, tickets purchased in advance

The nearest station is Higashi-Totsuka, reachable from central Tokyo and Yokohama. From there I walked to the course — and it is a fair distance, so wear comfortable shoes. By the time I arrived I had already gotten my steps in for the day.

One tip that matters every year: October mornings can be chilly while afternoons turn warm enough for short sleeves. Layers you can take on and off make a big difference.

Arrival and atmosphere

Tired from the walk? Sure — until that giant tournament panel comes into view and the excitement kicks back in.

There were fewer exhibitor booths this time, but perhaps because of that the official shop was large and well stocked. On the spot, we grabbed a pin flag — my kid suddenly announced he wanted players autographs, so we needed something for them to sign. That flag ended up being the souvenir of the day (more on that below).

World-class play, up close

My main target was Min Woo Lee. As it happened, his group was right in front of Hideki Matsuyama, so the galleries were huge — even on a weekday, finding a spot to watch was a challenge.

The practice green before the round. Getting this close to the players is one of the joys of watching in person.
Min Woo Lee and his caddie walking the fairway. Seeing the pros — and a course good enough to host the PGA TOUR — up close was a thrill.

What amazed me most was the tee shots. Of course they hit it far — but the ball lands right in the fairway at 290 to 300 yards, on purpose. Realizing that a controlled shot travels 300 yards, and that the approach still finds the green, made me feel like I was watching a different sport entirely. The gap in ball-striking is just enormous.

Hideki Matsuyama’s group drew a huge gallery. The size of the crowd said it all.

For the record, the 2025 title went to Xander Schauffele at 19 under par. Watching the world top players compete for real, right in front of you, is worth the trip on its own.

Going with kids changes the day (in a good way)

I brought my kids along, and — no surprise — they are not exactly into golf. After seeing a few players they were tired of walking, so most of the day they played in the kids area while I lay on the grass nearby. With the nice weather, that was its own kind of perfect.

By the afternoon the sun was out and we relaxed on the grass. This is the other way to enjoy a day at the course.

Then everything changed after the rounds. While the players practiced their putting and short game, many signed autographs for fans — and suddenly the kids were all in, chasing players around the practice area.

After their rounds, players signed autographs for fans. Grateful to every player who signed for the kids.
When Hideki Matsuyama came over, the kids swarmed — but he patiently signed for each one. A memory they will keep for a long time.

Watching my kids collect autographs from famous players they see on TV — as a golf-loving dad, that was the highlight of the whole day.

The pin flag, now covered in autographs. A new family treasure.

One honest downside

I go on weekdays every year to avoid the weekend crowds, but the trip home was seriously congested this time. After a full day on my feet, I was completely wiped out by the time I reached the station. If you go, leave a little margin for the journey back.

2026 dates and tips for attending

As mentioned, the 2026 Baycurrent Classic has been announced:

  • Dates: October 8 to 11, 2026 (Thu to Sun)
  • Venue: Yokohama Country Club
  • Tickets: information rolling out from early July 2026

Even a weekday was that busy, so if you are thinking about going, plan your tickets and travel early. Seeing world-class golf in person is the kind of experience every golf fan should try at least once.
